Through the use of collective imagery in glass, this work reflects the role of women artists throughout history.
Russian Pioneers of the Twentieth Century:
Russian Pioneers of the Twentieth Century, 2009, Assembled Sand Cast Glass with Painted Inclusions, 18" x 18" x 3.5"
This piece is an homage to the women artists of Russia during the early part of the last century. They were part of the early modernist movements that were happening throughout Europe. The photographic portraits of these women are haunting. I have great admiration for their perseverance in creating art during which must have been a time of great adversity especially for their gender. Here is a list of their names.
Top row starting on the left, O.M., Lububov Popava, and Eva Rozengolts-Levina
Middle row starting on left, Natalya Gancharova, Nina Simonovich Eflmora, and Nadezhda Udaltsova
Bottom row starting on left, Antonia Sofronova, Sofronova again, and Sarra Lebedeva
